The majority of modern day countries in Western Europe share a border with a large body of water. Countries such as Italy and the United Kingdom have multiple coastal fronts. This immediate access to a large body of water created an opportunity for trade at first with Northern Africa and later with the rest of the world. Many large cities and trade centers such as Barcelona and Rome developed earlier on in the region’s history. The Alpine Mountain Range created a natural barrier between several nations and prevented the movement of ethnic groups. The mountains were also an obstacle for armies to overcome in World War One.
